History

The Stony Brook University Soccer Club was founded in 2006/7 by a visionary by the name of Andrew Pietris.  He saw how popular soccer was at our fine university, and realized that the unbridled passion for soccer this campus shares needed a greater platform than downing bulk-size packages of TUMS while watching our men’s varsity team.

So Mr. Pietris approached the fine ladies and gentlemen at the University Student Government (USG) to apply as a club, and our history began.

In the beginning, the Club was little more than glorified pick-up games.  The funding from USG was used to make these pick-up games better equipped than most pick-up games.

Then, in 2008 under the fearless leadership of President Eric Small, an idea was born.  And for many, the dream became a reality.  In the Fall and Winter of 2008, Mr. Small secured Stony Brook a spot in the Long Island Soccer Football League.

Joining at the midpoint of the season, the club could only play under the name Farmingville Reserves.  A select group of dedicated soccer players took on the task of being the first university-sponsored club soccer team.

This intrepid group proved that the experiment could work, and in 2009, Stony Brook University Soccer Club entered into the 3rd Division of the LISFL to play its inaugural season.

Eric Small led the team to an appearance in the League Cup final, but “The Scholars” fell to the Long Island Gaels.

The Club hasn’t forgotten its humble roots, and continues to provide a way for all students at Stony Brook to enjoy the game of soccer. Club events include attending and mourning at varsity games as a group, heading to New Jersey to watch the mighty New York Red Bulls, watching soccer together, and participating in “Football Fridays,” when all are welcome to join Club members at the intramural fields for some soccer, regardless of ability or skill level.

In 2011, with Derek Cope at the helm, SBUSC opened a new chapter in its brief history, joining the New York Collegiate Club Soccer League to compete against other school in the area.

In 2012, the club is led by David Song and is continuing to grow and is reaching new heights. The team made the regional tournament for the second year in a row and is striving for continued success.

For about the next two years, the club continued slowly growing while taking part in the Region One Men’s Soccer Club League. In the first two weeks of November, the club team was notified about their opportunity to take part in the Open Division of the  NIRSA National Soccer Tournament . The club had accepted the chance to play at the national level against teams from across the country. With only 16 players able to attend, the club was able to beat the men’s club soccer teams from the University of Miami (1-0) and Purdue University (2-0). Unfortunately the club was unable to exit the group stage due to the loss against UC Davis (0-4).
